Harry Potter has dominated the KidLit fantasy landscape for two decades. Now, authors of diverse backgrounds who grew up reading Harry Potter are producing fantasies of their own. In 2019, Kirkus Reviews wrote an article about the “current effervescence of non-European fantasy” which brings to light the “thematic limitations of the traditional canon.” This panel of diverse authors explores both the legacy of Harry Potter in their own work and the ways that they sought to differentiate and personalize the fantasies they created.
