As librarians, we are the people most likely to support and encourage future diverse voices in the world of children’s books. When We Need Diverse Books was founded in 2014, there were only 510 books about people of color published out of 3,400 total, as reported by the Cooperative Children’s Book Center. In 2018, that number rose to 1,019 out of 3,644. The challenge of finding authentic, representative and inclusive books for your shelves is still real. Self-educate, advocate, and discover the best resources for children’s books that are truly mirrors, windows and sliding glass doors.
