Based on the book The Great Good Place (2000) by Ray Oldenburg, eight characteristics of third places, the "anchors" of community life, (Starbucks being the most oft-cited example) will be presented. Participants will share ideas for implementing these characteristics in their libraries. The presenter will discuss the transformation of Moorpark High School's library from a place that received less than 10 visits a day, to the heart of the campus, where on a typical day more than 300 students come in and out to have breakfast, study, play cards, charge their phones, and even check out books.

I love to talk about YA books, ways to market the library and draw more students in, and ways to work effectively with classroom teachers.
